Nihonbashi 1-Chome
Tokyo, Japan

Built on the site of the former Tokyu Department Store in Nihonbashi, the multipurpose office/ commercial building has been jointly developed by a consortium of three companies -- Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., Tokyu Corp., and Tokyu Land Corp. The building´s exterior has been designed by William Pedersen, chief designer of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in cooperation with Shigeru Sakiyama, chief architect of Nihon Sekkei, Inc. (Japan). The design has been honored with a number of awards, and was a finalist for both the ULI Awards for Excellence and the MIPIM Awards in 2005.
20 levels above ground, rising to 120 metres and with about 50.000m² rentable floor space, N1 dominates the surrounding views with its gently curving southern façade. The exterior consists of a combination of stone, glass and aluminium.
Permasteelisa K.K., the awarded façade contractor, applied HALFEN HTA 52/34 cast-in channels and high strength T-bolts HSR 50/30 to fix the curtain wall brackets to the 165mm thick concrete floor.
In Japan, more commonly the curtain wall bracket is fixed directly to the structural steel beam, by casting a pocket in the slab edge providing access to the top flange at each fixing point. This is a costly detail which increased both site labour costs and installation time. Even more costly is the use of structural steel gussets welded directly to the I-beam / edge steel plate
The use of embedded HALFEN Anchor channels in this project allowed for fast fixing and adjustment of façade brackets, while at the same time cost for structural steel work could be significantly reduced.
