Zollhof, Frank O. Gehry Bauten
Düsseldorf, Germany

The distinctive look of the Neuer Zollhof in Düsseldorf is a hot topic of conversation because of the buildings’ crooked facades, which are misaligned by up to 1.70 on every storey.
The terracotta coloured brick facade of the twelve-storey building A is securely anchored to the reinforced concrete structure with the HALFEN HK 4 brickwork support system (custom-made). The extravagant design conceived by architect Frank O. Gehry could be realised in all safety with this effective design solution. Support systems with load capacities of 7.0 kN to 10.5 kN were fixed in the load-bearing wall construction using HALFEN multicone injection anchors. At the base of the building, the distance between two brickwork support systems is 37.3cm, the first intermediate bracing is on the first floor. And then further up the intermediate bracings are anchored in every other floor. The HK 4 brickwork support systems are type tested in their standard version. Custom designs with a special static analysis were used for the extraordinary facade of the Neuer Zollhof. Any potential construction tolerances could be easily compensated for thanks to the height adjustable design (+/- 35 mm) of the support system.
