World Financial Center
Shanghai, China

At 492 meters, the Shanghai World Financial Center is currently the second highest building in Shanghai and the seventh-highest building in the world (2013). The building was opened on the 28th August 2008. The American architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox and the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd in Shanghai were commissioned for this prestige project. The method of construction and the design make optimal use of the building; from the large open plan offices at the lower floors to the smaller higher levels for the hotel.
The façade, the structure and the static system for the Shanghai World Financial Center are designed as a modular system. The modular system is repeated every 13 floors.
This method allows HALFEN HTA Channels to be used to full effectiveness.
Apart from the outstanding adjustability HALFEN Channels offer considerable time saving during construction. The result was faster construction progress and therefore a continuous reduction in costs.
The most distinctive feature of the Shanghai World Financial Center design is the trapezoid aperture at the peak. The original design specified a circular aperture, 46 m (151 ft) in diameter, to reduce the stresses of wind pressure. The unusual aperture at the top of the tower has led to the building being given the unofficial nickname “the bottle opener”.
HALFEN supplied HTA channels for this project.
