The Glasshouse Gardens consists of two residential blocks, 17 and 30 storeys high, providing 330 apartments overlooking the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The contemporary design includes wrap around precast concrete balconies and feature bands. These precast units whilst eye catching, significantly contributed to the overall energy losses of the building and were therefore a key design element. The client’s requirement for high thermal performance led the project engineers, Buro Happold, to contact HALFEN to assist with the thermal bridging and connection of the precast balconies. Using HIT-HP connections significantly improved the thermal performance of the balconies and the buildings.
The complex, wrap around shape of the balconies also required HALFEN to work closely with Grants Precast, detailing and designing the HIT units. The feature corbels in particular, required the design and manufacture of special HIT units which combined HALFEN’s headed stud technology with the high performance HIT-HP thermal breaks. Finally, close attention to the logistics ensured the HIT units were delivered on time to meet the fast track programme.
