Construction on the Burj Al Arab luxury hotel was started in 1994 and completed in 1999. With a total height of 321 meters this is one of the highest hotel buildings in the world. The shape of the structure, which mimics the sail of a dhow, a traditional Arabian boat, is the main characteristic feature of the building.
